Project...Research Paper Option

Research Paper Tutorial

Outlining

The best way to write a paper is to organize your thoughts ahead of time and to think about what you want to say...then, simply say it.

Do not worry about the number of pages or if it sounds "intelligent"...I'm hoping you have picked a topic that is of interest to you and you can write about it because you are interested in it. Now that you have read some websites and articles on the topic...what do you want to say about your topic? Outline the ideas based on the information you have gathered.

For my example I might come up with the following outline:

  • What is a gang?
  • Females in Gangs (statistics and such)
  • Females in Gangs (their role and status)
  • What if females get pregnant?
    • How does their status in the gang change?
    • Do they use pregnancy as a way to get out of the gang?
    • Do they access pre-natal health care?
    • What are the health risks associated with gang membership?
  • Summary and Conclusions

This is a simplified outline...because I have not read all these articles I don't actually know if there may be other sub-topics I might want to look at (such as marriage in the gang, co-parenting in a gang, etc.)

Just remember this...

It is vital that you ORGANIZE your thoughts BEFORE you begin to write your paper. Write plainly in the language you use every day as if you and I were having a conversation about the subject. When you sit down to write you should have a clear idea as to how you are going to start, how you are going to answer the question, what you are going to say, and what conclusions you will come to.

Before you start the actual writing, though, I want you to consider the overall structure of your paper in order to make it very readable and enjoyable to the reader.
