The Book of John

Chapter 1

This book has a focus on relating John the Baptist with Jesus and making sure that the reader understands that John the Baptist himself denies that he is the messiah. John says that Jesus is the Light.

In Jesus the "Word becomes flesh". The Word is God and Jesus is God incarnated on Earth.

John states that he did not know Jesus was the Messiah (likely until he saw the signs from heaven). John has become a voice for Jesus to the Jews.

This first chapter really focuses on making sure the Jesus is the one recognized as the Messiah, and not John.

Chapter 2

Jesus turns the water into wine, and not only it is wine, but it is recognized as very fine wine by the person who is running the banquet. Jesus later turns over the money changer tables in the temple.

Jesus is asked to show a sign...he discusses the temple being destroyed and raised again in three days. Of course, he was speaking of the temple of his body, not the temple building. Many asked for signs...Jesus did not associate himself with these individuals becuase he did not need thier OK to do what hecame to do. HE also knew the hearts of men. It is likely that many wanted to be with him for the status that it gave them in the community...Jesus, knowing this, would not abide by them.

Chapter 3

In this chapter Jesus teaches Nicodemus (and all of us) about salvation. Nicodemus was a Pharasee.

Jesus likens those born of the spirt to wind in the air. We don't know where it came from and we don't know where it is going. Being born of the spirit is like the presence of a mysterious spirit (the Holy Spirit) that flows through us and helps us to accomplish our role in the plan of God. To an outsider it s difficult to understand where all this energy and dedication comes from, but if you know they are born of the spirit you do know from where the energy comes.
